  • Sharp text output

Cons

  • High toner toll
  • Manual duplexing only, and not for Macs

Our Verdict

This basic laser is suited for low-volume use, boasting a minimum purchase price and size–but as wel minimal features, and maximal toner costs.

The elegantly perfoliate Samsung ML-2165W monochrome laser printer gives you laser-sharp text edition for lone $150. It's also quite compact, measurement a bare 13 inches wide aside 8.5 inches deep by 7 inches high, so IT's suitable for small knead areas. Extra features are deficient, and toner is pricey at about 4 cents per page; but for low gear-volume, basic printing process, it's worth a look up to.

Setting up the ML-2165W is easiness itself. Plug in the power cord, attach the small swiveling yield tray to the uppermost of the social unit, and press the WPS button (for Wi-Fi Fortified Setup). That's all thither is thereto–assuming you have a WPS-capable router. If you don't, you'll let to attach the printer to your computer via USB to rear the Wi-Fi–or utilize it as a USB-attached unit.

Controls are stripped. The aforementioned WPS button also pulls responsibility as the Continue/Print push button; and if you hold it bolt down for 15 seconds, it summons a status report. Beyond that, you get only the printer and toner status lights, and the happening/off button. The ML-2165W's printing machine device driver, though as basic, is also elegant and nicely organized. Samsung doesn't offer any layout options, but it does provide manual duplexing put up on the Microcomputer side. Unluckily, hand-operated duplexing ISN't available on the Mack. Considering that the ML-2165W's diminutive footmark makes IT earmark for dorm suite–a Mac bastion–that's an unlucky inadvertence. The Brother Hectolitre-2270DW costs the Lapp amount and includes automatic duplexing.

The ML-2165W's paper-handling features are spartan, likewise, though adequate for its intended light-duty role. The paper stimulant happening the bottom holds 150 sheets, and the turnout tray supra it holds 100 sheets.

The whole ships with a starting motor toner cartridge that leave last for approximately 700 pages. Subsequently that, you essential pay about $65 for a canonical 1500-page replacement cartridge, which comes to an expensive 4.3 cents per varlet.

Equally we recently showed with inkjets, a cheap printer can be a wad if you don't print much. The same reasoning applies to cheap, low-volume lasers like the Milliliter-2165W: Considering the low initial cost of the unit and the 700-page head start you bewilder, the toner costs are bearable.

The Milliliter-2165W's text output is superior–sharp and black. Graphics then again, while fine for the odd blockade chart, company logo, or other simple element, are granular tied when you prime 'Best' in the print dialog. Performance is slow, merely more than adequate for a personal unit. Monochrome pages exit at 11.6 pages per infinitesimal on the PC and 12.8 ppm on the Mackintosh. Graphics print at about 3.8 ppm. First pages arrive quickly–in about 10 seconds, which makes the unit of measurement very suitable for quick one-offs.

For low-spirited-volume personal printing, or as an adjunct to a color inkjet, the ML-2165W fits the bill. If you'rhenium a PC user, it could be a decent deal. It's regrettable, however, that Samsung forces Mac users to stick out through basketball game to get 2-sided printing.
